5. House Systems & Utilities

Heating & Hot Water

  • Heating is powered by electricity and heat pump.
  • Radiators: adjust via manual valves (twisty knobs).
  • Main thermostat: on the cupboard in the living room (next to the dining room door). Use up/down to set temperature (typically 22–23°C on cold days).
  • No hot water: wait a few minutes; it should restore. Tower bathroom may run out if filling a very full bath; downstairs shower takes ~20 seconds to get hot initially.

Log Burner

  • To light: 2 medium logs + 2 firelighters + kindling. Once burning, add a large log from wood stacks in the back storage/man-cave area.
  • Air feed: pull out slide handle under door when starting; push in once established.
  • Ash: empty into black metal ash bucket; when full, empty onto ash pile at top left of garden.
  • Firelighters: store safely away from heat; do not store touching the burner or on the metal floor plate.
  • Do not store wood under/next to the burner (fire risk and attracts mice). Use the basket or store at back of house.

Electricity & Fuse Box

  • Fuse box is in the garage.
  • If electricity needs resetting: reset any flicked-off switches on fuse boxes.
  • If all electricity is off: hold down the + button on the electricity feed box until a click is heard and power returns.
  • Supplier: TotalEnergies (outage info can be checked via their customer site).
  • If outage not resolved by resetting: contact Enedis Emergency Service: 09 72 67 50 24 (Dordogne = 24). Then call house manager for guidance.

Internet & Wi-Fi (repeat)

  • Network name: Livebox-8150
  • Password: FPS2xjPHNSKwZKg6jo

6. Waste, Recycling & Practicalities

Rubbish & Recycling

Waste processing in Dordogne can be complicated (welcome to rural France).

  • Household waste must be in 30L black bags. Starter sacks are under the sink.
  • Black bags are disposed of two at a time in the special bins at recycling stations.
  • If staying more than one week, you will be provided a code to deposit waste bags.
  • A large black bin at the roadside allows storage of black bags before taking them to recycling stations.
  • Recycling must be taken to local recycling areas:
    • Glass
    • All other plastic, paper, and metal
  • There is no recycling of food waste.

Recycling station locations

  • 961 Rte des Ruines, 24240 Monbazillac. Turn right out of the house. Turn right onto the route D933, then turn 1st left, then 2nd left and the recycling bins are 500m ahead.
  • Just off route D107 up the hill from the house. Go to the end of Route de Tirecul, turn right, then turn left and the recycling bins are immediately on the right.
